On Tuesday, the nominations for the 2017 Grammy Awards were announced! I, personally, am really excited because none of the popular nominees include Beyonce and alternative duo Twenty One Pilots! The award show, which will be hosted by James Corden, will take place on February 12, 2017, in Los Angeles, California.
James Corden, the host of the Late Late Show on CBS and the host of the award-winning Carpool Karaoke series, won an Emmy Award for “Outstanding Interactive Program” earlier in 2016. His Carpool Karaoke has featured many notable guests such as Michelle Obama, Madonna, Adele, One Direction, and many, many others.
This summer, the Grammys announced that there would be changes in the award guidelines in categories such as “Best New Artist”, “Best Blues Album”, and “Best Rap/Sung Collaboration” that will go into effect in 2017. In the “Best New Artist” category, the guidelines no longer require the artists to have released an album because many new artists are releasing EP’s and singles, but waiting to release an album until they gain the attention of the media. The “Best Blues Album” will become two separate categories in 2017: “Best Traditional Blues Album” and “Best Contemporary Blues Album.” “Best Rap/Sung Collaboration” will be renamed as “Best Rap/Sung Performance” so solo artists are able to enter the category as well.
As for the nominations, Beyonce was nominated nine times, more times than that of any other artist nominated for a Grammy ever. Her runners-up were Kanye West, Drake, and Rihanna, at eight nominations. It’s no wonder that Beyonce was nominated so many times, as “Lemonade” was named one of the best and most powerful albums in history. Many up-and-coming artists, such as Halsey, Chance the Rapper, and Twenty One Pilots, were nominated for two or more categories as well. David Bowie and Prince who both passed away earlier this year have their latest albums nominated for a Grammy as well.
The nominees for “Album of the Year” will all be tough competitors. Being some of the most influential and talented artists of this generation (Adele, Beyonce, Justin Bieber, Drake, and Sturgill Simpson), the voters’ decisions will not be easy. Many people believe that the toughest competition will be between Beyonce and Adele. So far, Adele has won ten Grammy awards along with eighteen nominations, and that may seem like a lot, but it is only half the size of the Grammy awards that Beyonce has received. Beyonce has twenty Grammy awards and a whopping sixty-two nominations, and with the six studio albums that she has released, that is no surprise!
